End the death penalty in Belarus -- Petition
Belarus is the last country in Europe and the former Soviet Union to carry out executions.
As states increasingly reject this inhuman punishment, you can help make Europe a death penalty-free zone.
The death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights. In Belarus, it is compounded by a flawed criminal justice system that violates international standards in its use of the death penalty.
Prisoners are reportedly tortured in order to extract "confessions" and denied access to an effective appeal. They are told they will be executed only moments before the sentence is carried out.
Amnesty International, Human Rights Centre Viasna and the Belarusian Helsinki Committee oppose the death penalty in all cases without exception.
We call on you to immediately establish a moratorium on executions and commute the sentences of all those on death row as a first step towards abolishing the death penalty

Call on Iran to release activist Emadeddin Baghi
Your Excellency,
I am writing to you to express my concern about the arrest of prominent human rights activist Emadeddin Baghi on 28 December 2009, following protests in Tehran and other cities marking 'Ashura.
I am particularly concerned because Mr Baghi suffers from poor health and he could be subjected to ill-treatment and medical neglect while in detention. During his previous imprisonment from October 2007 to October 2008, he suffered seizures and a heart attack and was denied access to the toilet, leading to kidney problems. He did not receive adequate medical treatment.
He has been repeatedly persecuted by the Iranian authorities for his peaceful advocacy for human rights; his Association for the Defense of Prisoners' Rights was shut down in September 2009 and he was prevented from receiving the prestigious Martin Ennals award for human rights activists in November 2009.
I urge that while in detention, Emadeddin Baghi be given access to his family, to his lawyer, and to any necessary medical attention. I also urge you to ensure that he is not subjected to torture or other ill-treatment. Finally, Emadeddin Baghi is a prisoner of conscience, and I therefore call for his immediate and unconditional release.

Minister of Justice of South Korea to establish an official moratorium on executions
Dear Minister,
I am writing to congratulate you on your recent appointment as Minister of Justice of South Korea and to express my concern that South Korea may resume executions. As the new Minister of Justice, I urge you to not resume executions in South Korea and to establish a moratorium on executions.
Amnesty International has repeatedly welcomed the fact that no executions have been carried out in South Korea since December 1997. However, repeated attempts to pass legislation in the National Assembly that abolish the death penalty have failed.
I understand that calls for the resumption of executions followed public anger after a trial found the defendant guilty of the murder of seven women. By opposing the death penalty, in no way do I wish to minimize the pain family members of murder victims feel, and my hope is that those responsible for crimes will be brought to justice.
However the death penalty does not deter crime more effectively than other punishments and brutalises those involved in the process of executions as well as the wider society.
A resumption of executions would come at a time when there is a clear international trend away from the use of the death penalty. When the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in 1948, eight countries had abolished the death penalty in law or practice. Today that figure stands at 139 with 94 countries having abolished the death penalty for all crimes.
Your recent appointment therefore signifies a crucial time to demonstrate the South Korea government’s ongoing commitment to the protection of human rights by announcing an official moratorium on executions.
I urge you to take the following steps:
As a matter of urgency, establish an official moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty as provided by UN General Assembly resolution 62/149 and resolution 63/168
Support the commutation of the sentences of all 60 prisoners who are currently on death row in South Korea

Come sostenitori di Amnesty International apprezziamo l'impegno del suo paese nell'assicurare il rispetto del diritto internazionale.
Le scriviamo poiché, in quanto presidente del Consiglio di sicurezza, ha la facoltà di sollecitare il Consiglio nel supportare il mandato del Consiglio Onu dei diritti umani di una missione d'accertamento dei fatti che indaghi sulle violazioni dei diritti umani avvenute nei 22 giorni di conflitto nella Striscia di Gaza e nel sud d'Israele tra dicembre 2008 e gennaio 2009. Le chiediamo di assicurare che il Consiglio richieda la collaborazione di israeliani e palestinesi alla missione d'accertamento dei fatti.
Come Le è noto, sia il presidente della missione d'accertamento dei fatti, recentemente nominato, che il presidente del Consiglio dei diritti umani hanno riconosciuto che la missione può adempiere in modo accettabile al proprio mandato solo prendendo in esame anche le violazioni del diritto internazionale commesse dai gruppi armati palestinesi, calmando così le preoccupazioni relative a un'esclusione dall'indagine degli abusi palestinesi.
Nel corso delle proprie indagini nel sud di Israele e nella Striscia di Gaza, Amnesty International ha riscontrato gravi violazioni del diritto internazionale umanitario, tra cui crimini di guerra. A Gaza, durante gli attacchi sproporzionati e indiscriminati numerosi civili sono stati uccisi, feriti e sono rimasti senza casa. Anche le strutture sanitarie e il personale medico sono stati presi di mira dall'esercito israeliano e il loro lavoro è stato ostacolato. Più di 1400 palestinesi sono stati uccisi, 300 dei quali bambini e centinaia di civili disarmati. Nel sud di Israele i civili si sono trovati sotto il lancio indiscriminato di razzi da parte dei gruppi armati palestinesi, che ha causato la morte di tre persone e di sei soldati israeliani.
Le vittime meritano di conoscere la verità e di ottenere giustizia, e il primo passo è un'indagine autorevole, indipendente e completa.
Inoltre, Le chiediamo di assicurare che il Consiglio di sicurezza richieda al Segretario generale delle Nazioni Unite la trasmissione del rapporto della commissione d'inchiesta Onu sugli attacchi contro il personale e le strutture dell'Onu a Gaza e che le sue conclusioni e raccomandazioni siano rese pubbliche.

Take Action -- No excuse, no delay: protect civilians in DRC

- Urge all parties to the conflict to ensure that humanitarian aid agencies are not hindered in their work to provide aid to displaced people
- Call on all parties to stop committing violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law
- Press the governments of the DRC and Rwanda to refrain from providing support to armed groups operating in eastern DRC
- Assert that justice and an end to impunity must now have a central place in the search for durable peace in the Great Lakes Region.
Finally, I implore the international community to develop lasting solutions to the conflict that has ravaged eastern DRC for more than 10 years.
